Snowman family celebrates the holiday season, tucked in their eggshell retablo. Retablos, image boxes portraying scenes of faith and daily life, were brought to Peru from Spain. Tiny figurines are hand-molded from plaster paste. "Boxes" vary in materials; each one is covered with intricate, colorful freehand designs. Artisans from towns like Ayacucho, Cuzco and impoverished sections of Lima, Peru have revitalized this ancient craft as a source of vital income.

THE MAKERS
Deep and lasting relationships are essential to this family-run business, whose name means "hands joined in friendship." They bring the wares of 60 workshops across Peru - gourd carvers, ceramicists, jewelry makers and reverse-painted glass artisans - to market. They create a variety of exquisite handicrafts that tell stories of tradition and resilience. "I want to keep going, keep working to get ahead. My work is a happiness." - Eulogio Medina
