Surprise Kantha Coasters

The Surprise Kantha Coasters are reversible and as unique as the people using them. Each one may be a different color and pattern because they're handstitched from reclaimed sari. They include a chip bag middle layer to help protect tables from moisture stains. Saris that may have a tear in them are no longer suitable for wearing but have plenty of beautiful material to cut up into new, upcycled uses, like these cheerful coasters. Ethically handcrafted in small batches by environmentalist artisans with Prokritee, an organization in Bangladesh that provides jobs and skills training for women in under-resourced communities. Prokritee improves women's standard of living with safe jobs, fair wages, and the goal of self-reliance, helping mothers send their children to school to break the cycle of generational poverty. It employs women traditionally excluded from the market: widows, heads of households, rural poor, or landless without another source of income.

THE MAKERS

Prokritee (meaning "nature" in Bengali) manages several handicraft enterprises and helps other groups sell their products in local and foreign markets. Prokritee and its enterprises provide jobs for poor rural women. By providing jobs for women, Prokritee improves women’s standard of living and helps them send their children to school. The organization provides skills development training to artisans. Prokritee creates and promotes income–generating projects that benefit the artisans, adhere to good safety and environmental standards, and have the potential to become self–reliant. Prokritee was established in 2001 as an independent organization. Ten Thousand Villages has purchased products from Prokritee and its predecessor MCC Bangladesh since 1986.
