STORY
Natural beauty perfectly poised to frame a treasured moment, a loved one, or a piece of art. On a shelf, table, or hung on a wall. Lichtenberg, or fractal burning, which produces these incredible lightning designs in the mango wood of the Roots Motif Frames, requires great skill and care. This photo frame was carefully crafted by artisans in India working with Noah's Ark Exports, who provide a multitude of social programs to increase artisans' opportunities to thrive.
Fractal burning, also known as Lichtenberg burning, is a dangerous woodworking technique involving live electrical currents passing through a conductive solution. While there have been no reported incidents of injury or death from our artisan partners at Noah's Ark, risk of injury and death is inherent and this technique should not be attempted by laypersons with homemade equipment. Following tragic deaths reported in the U.S. in fractal burning-related accidents, Ten Thousand Villages has chosen to suspend production on any fractal burning handicrafts as we evaluate the safety of our artisan partners in India. The product remaining for sale has been purchased upfront from skilled makers. Your purchase of it from Ten Thousand Villages goes back into our maker-to-market upfront financing model to be reinvested in more handicraft makers in under-resourced communities around the globe.
