STORY
Featuring electrified mango wood, the Roots Motif Handle Tray is stunning and serves up the perfect breakfast in bed, snack, or tea time. A lovely host gift too. The pattern on the tray is created by painting lines of baking soda, which conducts electricity onto the mango wood when a current is run through the wood. Handcrafted by artisans working with our fair trade partner, Noah's Ark International Exports, where makers learn the skills to start their own independent business.
Fractal burning, also known as Lichtenberg burning, is a dangerous woodworking technique involving live electrical currents passing through a conductive solution. While there have been no reported incidents of injury or death from our artisan partners at Noah's Ark, risk of injury and death is inherent and this technique should not be attempted by laypersons with homemade equipment. Following tragic deaths reported in the U.S. in fractal burning-related accidents, Ten Thousand Villages has chosen to suspend production on any fractal burning handicrafts as we evaluate the safety of our artisan partners in India. The product remaining for sale has been purchased upfront from skilled makers. Your purchase of it from Ten Thousand Villages goes back into our maker-to-market upfront financing model to be reinvested in more handicraft makers in under-resourced communities around the globe.
